RDP Performance Enhancements

Last Updated: Feb 22, 2017 12:44PM PST
Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol (aka RDP) is designed to deliver a Microsoft Windows based desktop environment remotely to other devices including non-Windows based devices. With that in mind Aqua Connect's Ignision software must translate some of the macOS specific graphical information into information compatible for the RDP client device/software. If you are using a modern RDP client, (one manufactured in the past 2 years or less), then there are things that can be adjusted to increase performance for your connection. The performance increase comes at a cost of compatibility with older RDP clients but can be adjusted on a client per client basis which this article will lay out.

One area of translation that needs to occur is with color palette shifting. Setting the RDP client to use 32 bit colors will cause the Ignision software to skip the color palette shifting and thus increase performance. Depending on the RDP client used will cause this option to appear in various places. Typically it is under the "Show Options" section of the RDP client and in the "Display" tab section.

Another area is Persistent bitmap caching. With this feature on the Ignision software must translate the graphical data into a bitmap format for caching and then transmit the bitmap data as well as a separate draw command to the RDP client. Disabling Persistent bitmap caching will reduce the translation and transmission steps. Depending on the RDP client used will cause this option to appear in various places. Typically it is under the "Show Options" section of the RDP client and in the "Experience" tab section.
